5 HTP (5-OH-Tryptophan or Griffonia simplicifolia) This is an amino acid which is found in common foods. Tryptophan is present in most protein-based foods or dietary proteins. It is particularly plentiful in chocolate, oats, dried dates, milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, red meat, eggs, fish, poultry, sesame, chickpeas, almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, buckwheat, spirulina, and peanuts. then further metabolised to melatonin. L-Tryptophan, L-Tyrosine and other large neutral amino acids (Phenylalanine) are passed into the brain by a common transport system. These amino acids all compete with the one another for entry into the brain. Since most food proteins contain small amounts of Tryptophan and much larger proportions of the other amino acids, a high-protein meal, although increasing blood Tryptophan levels, retards the uptake of Tryptophan into the brain by disproportionately increasing the plasma concentrations of the other amino acids that compete with Tryptophan. On the other hand, a high carbohydrate meal, releasing insulin, results in elevating brain tryptophan and serotonin concentrations which pass through the blood brain barrier without competition.
Co-factors biotin, B6 and zinc and tryptophan hydroxylase are required in the conversion of L-Tryptophan into the active form 5-OH-Tryptophan and then changed to serotonin the active neurotransmitter affecting brain stabilization. This process is essential to life as we know it. A breakdown in this mechanism or a decrease in serotonin levels itself can bring about a variety of symptoms such as poor concentration, anxiety, cravings and depression.
